So, you’ve grabbed your Blooms + Herbs Topiary DIY Kit, but now you’re standing in your kitchen or Craft Room wondering... "What do I put this in?"
In this blog post, we’re walking you through curated suggestions and tips of container inspiration to help you find the perfect match for your 4.5" faux moss sphere. Whether your style is "French Countryside," "Modern Farmhouse," or "Antique Eclectic," the right vessel is what truly brings your botanical sculpture to life.
In this post, we cover:
Size Matters: Why a 4–6 inch opening is the "Golden Ratio" for this kit.
Texture & Tone: Pairing your seasonal theme (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) with the right materials—from aged terracotta to vintage tin.
Pro-Tips: How to weight your container and hide your "mechanics" using the Spanish moss provided in your kit.
Each kit features hand-harvested herbs and florals from our homestead in Amherst, VA or sustainably secured from our trusted suppliers.
Since our DIY Kit includes everything but the vessel, you have the creative freedom to define your topiary’s "personality." Because your kit comes with a 4.5-inch sphere, you’ll want a container that provides both physical and visual balance.
Opening Width: Look for a container with a 4 to 6-inch opening. This allows the foam to fit snugly and ensures the 4.5-inch moss ball doesn't look "lost" or top-heavy.
Height: A vessel between 4 to 7 inches tall usually provides the most classic proportions.
The Rustic/Farmhouse Look: * Try: An aged terracotta pot, a small galvanized metal bucket, or a wooden crate.
Best for: Fall and Summer themes.
The Vintage/Romantic Look:
Try: A weathered concrete urn, an antique tea tin, or a mismatched porcelain pitcher.
Best for: Spring and Custom floral themes.
The Modern/Minimalist Look:
Try: A matte black ceramic cylinder or a simple white stoneware pot.
Best for: Winter or monochromatic herbal designs.
Weight Matters: If your container is very lightweight (like a thin tin), add a few stones or pebbles to the bottom before inserting the styrofoam. This prevents the topiary from tipping over once the florals are added.
Hide the "Mechanics": Use the Spanish Moss included in your kit to generously cover the styrofoam. Let a little bit of the moss spill over the edge of the container for a natural, "grown-in" appearance.
The "Rule of Thirds": For the most pleasing look, aim for the container to take up about one-third of the total height, while the limb and the floral sphere take up the remaining two-thirds.
We love a good upcycled find! Check your local thrift stores, antique malls, or even your kitchen cupboards. Often, a forgotten jam crock or a chipped sugar bowl makes the most charming topiary base.
